Although America’s founders may have been inspired by the political thought of ancient Greece and Rome, the United States is more often characterized by its devotion to the pursuit of commerce. Some have even said that a modern commercial republic such as the United States unavoidably lowers its moral horizon to little more than a concern with securing peace and prosperity so that commerce can flourish.

            Michael Chan reconsiders this view of America through close readings of Aristotle and Alexander Hamilton, showing that America at its founding was neither as modern nor as low as we have been led to believe. He challenges the virtue/commerce divide that dominates modern thought by demonstrating that the prevailing views of Aristotle and Hamilton on commerce reflect misleading half-truths.

            Chan first examines Aristotle’s views of economics as presented in the Politics, arguing that Aristotle was not as hostile to commerce as is commonly believed. He points out the philosopher’s belief in the value of commercial acquisition in the interest of supplying citizens with the “equipment of virtue,” citing Aristotle’s praise of commercial Carthage over agrarian but much-esteemed Sparta.

            Chan then turns to a detailed account of the political economy of Hamilton, a proponent of an advanced industrial republic modeled on Great Britain. While many take Hamilton’s advocacy of public credit, a national bank, and manufacturing as evidence of his rejection of classical republican thought in favor of modernity, Chan contends that Hamilton embraced a classically inspired economic statesmanship that transcended a concern with merely securing peace and prosperity. Leading the reader through the complexities of Hamilton’s thought, Chan shows that he intended commerce to pursue the wider classical goals of forming the character of citizens, establishing harmony and justice, and pursuing national greatness. Rather than attempting to brand Hamilton an Aristotelian, Chan seeks to incorporate into the study of Hamilton’s political economy what Aristotle himself regarded as the statesman’s characteristic virtue, prudence.

            By reflecting on Hamilton in the context of Aristotle’s own reflections on commerce, Chan casts him in a new light that cuts across the ongoing debate about liberal versus classical republican elements of the American founding. His cogent analysis also raises important questions regarding the American system as it is being challenged by conflicting worldviews. Aristotle and Hamilton on Commerce and Statesmanship makes a significant contribution to our understanding of both Hamiltonian thought and the moral worthiness of democratic capitalism.

±1±: Best Buy Let say that for those interested in the communications of the founding fathers, this is one of the books needed to understand that communication.

This book focuses on Jefferson and Madison both intellectual giants in the founding the United States. Jefferson most for his ideas and Madison for his valued sounding board to Jefferson and his finesse taking those ideas and making them part of the way of life as we know them today.

It is always a pleasure to read the letters that transpired between these two people. Most of us do not have the privilege of reading these letters first hand and have to rely on others for their interpretation. I find that this author does a fine job of this and offers good background to the letters of the time that they were written.

Those that are studying the founding fathers and especially Jefferson and Madison will like this tome, I did and I recommend it.

The Constitution and the Bill of Rights, The Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions, and the heart warming chapter Take Care of Me When Dead were my favorites.

Again a must read for understanding these two men and the times they came from... I hope you enjoy as much as I did. on Sale!

However, it was still quite difficult to read. This new edition of the Federalist Papers has been "translated" into 10th-grade reading level. This edition makes the Papers accessible to nearly everyone. The 41-page index in this edition refers to the Paper Number and paragraph number, rather than page number, so that the topics are easily found, even in earlier editions of the Papers.

Classically trained and devoted to perspicuity they meticulously applied words that contained precise sentiments they wished to convey. Madison acknowledged this very fact in Federalist 37. This is true even reading Washington's Addresses, so it is a matter to be dealt with by all of us, as well as the changing meanings of words over time. In McCullough's book on Adam's he noted the difference between awful as we use it ,and how Adams used the term, that is to express awe.

The Federalist Essays in Modern Language exhibits a valiant and timely effort to build a stronger bridge between us and our precious heritage. It is such efforts we need to support for the inestimable benefits we can gain. Although some might dismiss such efforts to comprehend the original understanding found in the essays as a fool's errand, we should never the less proceed. It may be intellectually lazy not to consider and to reflect on the insights found there, and employ the information to our common benefit.

±1±: Best Buy This book may be boring to some, but I recommend picking this book up as it is the text that Hamiliton, Jay, and Madison wrote in favor of our Constitution. Each section describes the reasoning behind the outline and responsibilites of our federal government and the limited government they envisioned. A good book for political science students and/or American history buffs alike.

I would like to get a copy of the "Anti-Federalist" papers which is obviously the argument against the Constitution, just to get the other side's perspective during the transitioning times from The Articles of Confederation to our Constitution.

Nonetheless, I am glad the Founding Fathers ratified the Constitution, what are leaders are doing to the Consitution today is a crime.
